Enigin Scam Avoidance Manual, How to guide.
I enter this page writing with fear that it may sound like the never ending excitement of a tax manual ( for those in doubt that was sarcasm!), those dreadful words, “tax doesn’t need to be taxing” ringing in my ears. I mean come on, tax is taxing isn’t it, that’s the whole point. I digress. Although some would say paying tax is a scam of all scams and a ripoff to boot this is not the point I want to make.
The point is just as with shrewd investment of time you can avoid tax payments, with shrewd investment of your time you can avoid scam on the internet and elsewhere, as with taxes and such it may not appear the most exciting adventure but it non the less is a vital process and one which you undoubtedly will be glad you took the time to do, just ask any accountant or ‘victim’ of a tax investigation.
Here at Enigin Digital we are the technical guys in the know, but I wager that you too have been burnt with the occasional internet scam, ask around. My personal tale of woe includes purchasing a macbook pro on ebay for an unbelievably good price, guess what… yes it never arrived. Thanks to paypal I did get some money back, so all was not lost, but to fall to such a scam was disappointing, to say the least, not considering the time lost.
So then to avoid such scams i recommend the following…
Try at an early opportunity to get in contact with someone and converse, don’t rely on auto replies systems, get in dialogue with someone and you will get a feel for the viability of the investment.
Trust your own judgement, if your mind is screaming scam, don’t go ahead with it.
Check the facts and figures, look for case studies and real life interviews, you will be able to tell if they have found a golden investment opportunity or not.
Look for honesty and transparency, vague empty phrases such as ‘fantastic savings’ are meaningless without the facts somewhere to be found to back it up. Looks for someone who has taken the time to explain how there products work. See one of the Enigin Scambusters Pages for great examples of this.
Specifically with energy saving, look at something like eniscope it vividly displays energy saving in your building/business, so if you are going to try some energy saving products, you can see the real effect they are having before you receive your next energy bill.
I know these tips may not be ground breaking game changers but they at least are sound reminders as to what to look out for when investing your time and even your savings, be it in the energy saving sector, or looking for a new accountant.
